It is unreliable to identify marine fishes only by external morphological features. Species misidentification brings great challenges to fishery research, resource monitoring and ecomanagement. Sillago ingenuua is an important part of commercial marine fishes, and in which, the morphological differences between different groups are not obvious. Here, we compared different geographical groups of S. ingenuua which were collected from Xiamen, Dongshan, Keelung, Songkhla and Java. The results showed that all samples of S. ingenuua were similar in external morphological characteristics and the shape of the swim bladder, but there were two distinctive lineages which were flagged as cryptic species based on DNA barcoding. The comparative mitogenomic results showed that S. ingenuua A and S. ingenuua B were identical in structural organization and gene arrangement. Their nucleotide composition and codon usage were also similar. A phylogenetic analysis was performed based on 13 concatenated PCGs from eight Sillago species. The results showed that the genetic distance between S. ingenuua A and S. ingenuua B was large (D = 0.069), and this genetic distance was large enough to reveal that S. ingenuua A and S. ingenuua B might be different species.

BACKGROUND: Online communication platforms have the potential to facilitate commercial sex among female sex workers (FSW), increasing the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STD). This study aimed to describe the patterns of online commercial sex-seeking and examine the associated factors among FSW in China. METHODS: A venue-based cross-sectional study was conducted in five cities in Guangdong Province, China, between April and October 2020. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, and online commercial sex-seeking patterns were collected through face-to-face interviews. Venous blood and urine samples were collected for STD testing. Univariate and multivariable logistic regressions were used to explore the factors associated with online commercial sex-seeking. RESULTS: A total of 1155 FSW were recruited in physical venues for this study. Among them, 33.42% reported ever using online applications to seek commercial sex. The prevalence of HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and STD was 0.26%, 1.30%, 4.40%, 15.54%, and 18.39%, respectively, among FSW who had ever used both physical and online venues to seek commercial sex, which was higher than among FSW who had never sought commercial sex online. Multivariable logistic regression indicated that FSW who used online platforms to seek commercial sex were more likely to have STD (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.48, 95%CI: 1.05-2.09), experience unintended pregnancies due to commercial sex (aOR = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.21-2.62), be diagnosed as infertile (aOR = 3.20, 95%CI: 1.42-7.21), and undergo abortions (aOR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.29-2.20). CONCLUSION: A significant proportion of FSW who practiced in physical venues in China engaged in seeking commercial sex online, and this behavior is positively correlated with both STD and reproductive health outcomes. Given the high prevalence of online sex-seeking, it is crucial to provide a wide range of internet-based healthcare interventions and reproductive health services to Chinese FSW.

Toxoplasma gondii infection is a severe health threat that endangers billions of people worldwide. T. gondii utilizes the host cell membrane to form a parasitophorous vacuole (PV), thereby fully isolating itself from the host cell cytoplasm and making intracellular clearance difficult. PV can be targeted and destroyed by autophagy. Autophagic targeting results in T. gondii killing via the fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes. However, T. gondii has developed many strategies to suppress autophagic targeting. Accordingly, the interplay between host cell autophagy and T. gondii is an emerging area with important practical implications. By promoting the canonical autophagy pathway or attenuating the suppression of autophagic targeting, autophagy can be effectively utilized in the development of novel therapeutic strategies against T gondii. Here, we have illustrated the complex interplay between host cell mediated autophagy and T. gondii. Different strategies to promote autophagy in order to target the parasite have been elucidated. Besides, we have analyzed some potential new drug molecules from the DrugBank database using bioinformatics tools, which can modulate autophagy. Various challenges and opportunities focusing autophagy mediated T. gondii clearance have been discussed, which will provide new insights for the development of novel drugs against the parasite.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis testing uptake remains low among men who have sex with men (MSM) in many low-and middle-income countries. Syphilis self-testing is an efficacious approach on increasing syphilis testing coverage. However, one unintended consequence is the syphilis self-testing coercion from others (including partners, healthcare providers, friends, etc.). This study aimed to examine the prevalence, pattern and correlates of coerced syphilis self-testing among MSM in China. METHODS: A nationwide online cross-sectional study was conducted from 14 to 28 July 2018. Sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviors and coerced syphilis self-testing variables were collected through a questionnaire that targeted MSM in China. Multivariable logistic regression was used to explore associated factors with syphilis self-testing coercion. RESULTS: Overall, 174 MSM were recruited in this study, 31 men (17.8%) reported ever experiencing syphilis self-testing coercion. The most common types of coercion before syphilis self-testing were verbal abuse (38.7%, 12/31) and threatening to end a relationship (38.7%, 12/31). After obtaining the self-test results, men were mostly subjected to end a relationship (45.2%, 14/31) and threaten of violence (35.5%, 11/31). Multivariable logistic regression indicated that men who used condoms inconsistently in the past three months, ever used substances before or during sex, ever had group sex with males and commercial sex were more likely to experience syphilis self-testing coercion. CONCLUSIONS: Coerced syphilis self-testing was prevalent among MSM in China. Innovative intervention to reduce coerced syphilis self-testing is necessary among MSM in China.

RESUMO

CircHIPK3 is a type of endogenous circular RNA, which contains a covalently closed circular structure and cannot encode protein or polypeptide. CircHIPK3 is unusually expressed in varieties of tumors and plays dual roles of tumor promotion or tumor inhibition in tumorigenesis and development of tumors by serving as the sponge for miRNA in multiple tumors. Here, we reviewed the differential expression, the dual functions, the regulation mechanism, and the network in a variety of tumors as well as the potential value for the diagnosis and treatment of tumors, which are of great significance for our comprehensive understanding of the roles and mechanisms of circHIPK3 in tumors.

Food poisoning is caused by pathogenic bacteria in water and aquatic products, especially bivalves (e.g., oysters, clams), which can bioaccumulate pathogenic bacteria. Polluted water and aquatic products thus pose a serious threat to human health and safety. In this study, the types of pathogenic bacteria in water samples and shellfish collected from the Dadeng offshore area in Xiamen were examined. We also analyzed the relationships between dominant pathogens and major climate and water quality parameters. Our objective was to provide reference data that may be used to help prevent bacterial infections and to improve aquatic food hygiene in Xiamen and its surrounding areas to safe levels, thus ensuring the health of Xiamen residents. We found that the main pathogenic bacteria were Vibrio and Bacillus, with the dominant pathogen being Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Physical and chemical indexes (water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity) of water bodies and the 3-day accumulated rainfall were found to be important factors affecting the occurrence and abundance of V. parahaemolyticus.
